Born in 1937, David Hockney was one of Britain’s most recognised and celebrated artists, with a career spanning over half a decade. He became an essential contributor to the Pop Art Movement of the 1960s and was considered one of the most influential painters of the 20th century. As an art style, pop art was characterised by bright colours, which was seen in David Hockney’s prints.
At school, he studied under Francis Bacon and Peter Blake but also credits Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse for their influence on his distinctive and varied approach to art. Living between London and California, his artwork was influenced by both these places. While in London, he painted the seasons, but it really was the Californian landscape that was a huge inspiration for Hockney. This was most evident in this swimming pool series, especially his ‘Splash’ paintings, such as ‘A Bigger Splash’ from 1967.
Hockney is represented in significant collections across the globe, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Hayward Gallery Arts Council Collection in London and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
