Meet Nectar, the moustachioed delivery man of Maison Nicolas, carrying 32 bottles of wine at once. Founded in Paris in 1822, Nicolas is credited with being the first merchant to sell wine by the bottle. In 1922 it commissioned Jules Isnard Dransy (1883–1945) to show that it delivered to customers’ doors, and Nectar became one of the first recurring mascots in advertising, later reinvented by Cassandre, Loupot and Iribe. This monumental 1949 edition after Dransy’s design shows Nectar mid-stride, bottles of red and white fanned out in both hands, his wide eyes fixed on the viewer. At 161 × 120 cm, it was made for the streets of France, and few large originals survive today. Original lithograph, linen backed, in good condition.
