What is Art Deco?

Art Deco is a popular design style from the 1920’s and 1930’s characterised by geometric forms, especially evident in the influence cubism had on the Art Deco period. The Art Deco style originated in France, before developing into a major style throughout Western Europe and America in the 1930’s. Replacing Art Nouveau after World War I, its distinguishing feature was its Geometric style, which included simple, clean shapes and colours. While this was different from Art Nouveau, which was more organic, both art styles involved the use of luxurious materials such as bronze, ivory and ebony. Its geometric designs represented the machine age aesthetic, replacing floral motifs with streamlined designs to symbolise power, speed and modern technology.
