Niki de Saint Phalle Montreux Detroit Jazz 5th Festival (Pink Nana)
The event. The Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival was the Detroit offshoot of the famous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. 1984 was its 5th edition, and artists were commissioned to design its posters.
Nana. The Nanas are Niki de Saint Phalle’s best-known motif: big, joyful, brightly coloured female figures. “Nana rose” means this design features a pink one.
Screenprint (sĂ©rigraphie). Ink is pushed through a fine mesh stencil, one colour at a time. That’s what gives the flat, saturated colour areas typical of her prints.
Signed and numbered, edition of 50. This is the key point. Ordinary festival posters were printed in large runs and unsigned. This is one of only 50 signed, numbered impressions on heavy paper, so it’s a limited-edition artist’s print rather than a regular street poster.
Size 69.7 cm wide × 99.5 cm tall.
Condition It was kept rolled, which has left crease marks across the sheet and some damage along the edges (likely small tears, nicks or bumped corners). Flattening by a paper conservator, then framing, usually improves this a lot.
Provenance. Colette Creuzevault was a Paris gallery owner. A dealer’s collection is a respectable provenance.
