Born in 1887, Chagall developed a unique and poetic personal visual language over the course of his career. In addition to his paintings, Chagall also produced works in vibrant stained glass and lithography. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Albertina in Vienna, among others.
This poster was designed for a retrospective show at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, held in June 1959 in Paris. It is arranged as a self-portrait, fitted with elements from the circus life such as a clown’s profile, blended into Chagall’s own face.
